Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS)

Changes to consent for settlement consumption data

As part of a nationwide effort to support the UK’s Net Zero goals, the energy regulator Ofgem is introducing a new system called Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS). This will change the way suppliers like us collect and use your energy usage data – and it’s designed to help create a smarter, greener and more efficient energy system.

What is MHHS?

MHHS means that your energy supplier (that’s us!) can collect your electricity usage data every 30 minutes, instead of once a month or when you submit a reading.

This helps us better understand your usage and predict your energy needs more accurately. This means we can buy the right amount to make sure we’re meeting demand, rather than trying to estimate this based on your average usage.

What are the benefits of MHHS?

Moving to half-hourly data collection brings some important benefits – not just for energy suppliers, but for you and the planet too:

  • Smarter predictions, less waste – By seeing your usage patterns more clearly, we can buy the right amount of energy to meet your needs – reducing waste and helping to keep costs down.
  • Tailored products and services – With a clearer picture of how you use energy, we can create smarter, more personalised services to help you get the most from your energy.
  • Help you make greener choices – Understanding when you use energy allows us to offer tools or advice that help you use less when demand (and cost) is highest – supporting your own sustainability goals.
  • Supports a more reliable energy grid – With better forecasting across the industry, MHHS helps reduce pressure on the National Grid – helping to prevent outages and make the system more resilient for everyone.

You’ll need a Smart meter to access the benefits. Find out how to upgrade your meter(s) by clicking here.

What next?

If you’re an existing Utilita Business customer, communications providing more detailed information on the Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) proposals and how they may impact your business will be issued shortly.

And if you don’t have a smart meter yet, you’ll need one to benefit from MHHS. Book your free smart meter install to get started.

Important Notes:

  • This change only affects smart and advanced meters.

Meter Half Hourly FAQS

Market wide Settlement Half-Hourly is a UK wide change to how electricity usage is measured and billed, ensuring more accurate and timely settlements using half-hourly data.

MHHS changes the roles of industry agents. Existing Meter Operator (MOP) and Data Collector (DC) roles will transition to Metering and Data Services. If your independent provider cannot qualify under the new rules, we’ll appoint one of our chosen approved agents to ensure continuity of service.  Please let us know if you have an independent agreement.

Yes. Customers with Advanced (AMR) meters are included in MHHS and will benefit from improved accuracy and settlement visibility.

This will be subject to criteria that has been set by Ofgem. When we send out your communications, we’ll explain your options and what they mean for you.

You can contact us to update this preference, or any other preference, at any time (subject to the criteria that has been set by Ofgem).

Changes to the use of sharing data for settlement purposes only impacts customers who have a smart meter and an electricity supply.

Yes, we will update your Terms & Conditions to reflect this change.

Yes, all data collected, stored and processed will be safe and in full compliance of GDPR.

No, all changes will be made remotely.

If you’re an export customer generating renewable energy (such as solar power), you’ll automatically be opted-in to send half-hourly readings from your export meter.  This is because your payments are based on the energy you generate, which is measured every 30 minutes.  However, you won’t be able to opt-out.  Please note this doesn’t affect your choices for your electricity import meter.
